The book 50 Shades of Gray was a surprise hit. To be honest there is a lot going for the book and it just so happens that the book hit the digital book shelves at exactly the right time. You see if this book was released before the Kindle and other eReaders were released it may not have reached its same level of success.

While some may claim that these books were self published that is just simply not the case. The fact of the matter is that an Australian book publisher by the name of The Writer’s Coffee Shop took the novels to print as ebooks and print on demand paperbacks. This may seem like a small distinction to some but for some authors this is a point of contention that they try and point out at every possible instance.

What is 50 Shades of Gray?

50 Shades of Gray is an erotic novel that would have been unthinkable to be caught buying about 10 years ago, but now this is perfectly okay as you can do so from the comfort of your Kindle. But what do you really know about the author E L James? After all many people thought this book was written by a man and not a woman, that is why the author used only initials instead of her full name.

E L James got her start writing fan fiction, for many new writers this is the best way to go. One of her hits was for the series Twilight and from that hit she developed her trilogy 50 Shades of Gray. If you are really interested in reading her earlier works you may want to look her up as Snowqueens Icedragon, as that was her pen name at the time.

Who is E L James?

The initials in her name stand for Erika Leonard in case you were wondering about that and initially she was born Erika Mitchell in 1963. Erika actually had a pretty interesting career working as a history reader at the University of Kent. After her job at the University she worked as a television executive. Perhaps it was this combination of understanding history as well as understanding how people saw things visually that helped her create truly memorable characters for her books.

Currently this author resides in West London with her husband and two teenage sons. Since she was so successful with this book and her entire trilogy she really does not have to work again if she chose not to. While there is some speculation that she may come out with a new series of books there really has not been anything concrete from her publicist regarding this, nor have we seen any hints of this in any other bits of fan fiction that may be floating around.

Is there a possible movie in production?

There has been some speculation of a movie being produced by Hollywood in the near future. The actual start date or script is unknown at this time, but that does not stop the rabid fans from coming up with their own timelines.

The author E L James does maintain an official author blog where you may find the author communicating with her readers on a regular basis. Since she was so heavy into fan fiction this seems very reasonable and perfectly understandable as she was also a fan of other series.
